Capstone Project: Rope Climbing Robot

Project Overview

Our team of six, comprised of students from various engineering disciplines (Electrical, Mechanical, Systems, Computer Engineering, and Computer Science), was tasked with designing and building an autonomous robot. This robot needed to climb and descend a rope suspended from the engineering building tower, ring a bell located a specific distance from the rope at the tower's peak, calculate its travel distance, and audibly announce its progress. Critically, the robot had to operate completely wirelessly.

My role, as a computer science major, involved a thorough evaluation of Microcontrollers Following testing and comparison, we determined the OOPic2 to be the optimal choice, owing to its price and available built-in objects.

Description

During my senior year in Oakland University's Engineering and Computer Science program, a semester-long group project was a mandatory component. Our team of six, comprised of students from various engineering disciplines (Electrical, Mechanical, Systems, Computer Engineering, and Computer Science), was tasked with designing and building an autonomous robot.

Technology

A key responsibility was assisting in the establishment of the distance measurement method, as described below.
